The best setting for heating is the lowest temperature at which you are comfortable. Most people are comfortable at a setting of 68 to 70 degrees, and each degree higher can increase your heating cost by 1-2%. For cooling, the best setting is the highest temperature at which you are comfortable. We recommend 78 degrees when you are at home and 80 degrees while you are away. As a rule, raising the thermostat 2 degrees will reduce your cooling cost by 5%.

A programmable thermostat can reduce energy consumption by 16 to 25 percent, according to a study published in the ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers Journal.

Your filters should be checked on a routine basis. We recommend that your filters be checked at least once a month to ensure proper air flow and optimal efficiency of your heating and cooling system.

Your heating and cooling system should be checked and maintained by a licensed air conditioning and heating technician at least once a year. Annual maintenance, air conditioning in the spring and heating in the fall, can extend the life of the system and maintain optimum efficiency.

A system with a higher SEER rating operates under the same conditions more efficiently than a lower rated system. Federal restrictions currently require all new systems produced to have a 13 SEER rating or higher.

Heat pumps are comfort systems that use refrigerant to both cool and heat a house. When cooling, the heat pump transfers heat from the inside of the house to the outside, making the interior of the house cooler. When the outside air is cold, the heat pump reverses itself and transfers heat from the outside to the inside of the house. Heat pumps often utilize electric heat strips to supplement the transfer of heat and warm the interior of the house faster.

There are many ways you can add years to the life of your system. By following these simple prevention tips, you have the opportunity to both extend your system's life and optimize your comfort level. Changing the filter and flushing the drain line are a first. Other preventative measures include cleaning the indoor coils with a vacuum or brush. The outdoor coil should always be kept free from grass, leaves, shrubbery and other debris. Always take time to review your owners' manual when purchasing a new system. Be sure that all registers and vents are not restricted by furniture, carpets, rugs, or curtains.
